CHAPELLE SAINTE-ODILE

France > Grand Est > Moselle > 57850 > Dabo > Neustadtmuhle #### Lat. 48,6803 Long. 7,1974

Perched on its sandstone promontory, the Sainte-Odile chapel slightly overhangs the Zorn valley. Jean-Jacques Bernauer, miller in Neustadtmuhle, had the chapel built in 1740, the date engraved on the lintel of the entrance. In 1740, the neighboring communities of Neustadtmuhle and Schaeferhof were under the protection of St. Odile, patron saint of Alsace. This chapel served as a place of worship for the inhabitants of the surrounding area for whom the parish church of Dabo was too far away. After many vicissitudes, it was restored in 1925 and became in the middle of the last century a notorious place of pilgrimage. Inside, paintings evoke the life of Saint Odile. On the roof stands a bell tower topped by a bulb, in which hangs a bell weighing 36 kg and dating from 1743. How to get there: direction Dabo via D98C then D45 the chapel overlooks the road on the left between Neustadtmuhle and Schaeferhof.
