In a pleasant forest environment punctuated by ponds where the wooded hills shimmer, the walker reaches the ruins of Falkenstein Castle, the most imposing of the castles in the Pays de Bitche. Built in the 12th century by order of the Count of Lutzelbourg, in order to protect his possessions in the Haguenau Holy Forest, the castle was destroyed by a violent fire in 1564. The building burned for five days and five nights.
