In 1923, the city council approved the plan for the war memorial to be built in front of the city hall, but postponed the order. The memorial was finally inaugurated in 1925, in the presence of the widows and families bereaved by the Great War. On May 8, 1948, the anniversary of the Armistice of the Second World War, the City of Pompey received the Croix de Guerre during an important ceremony where the Harmonie des aciéries, veterans, former prisoners, S.O.R., S.T.O., military medallists, local companies, a detachment of the 8th Artillery Regiment, the Nancy and Pompey firemen were present. After a parade through the streets, the procession gathered at the war memorial in the presence of the secretary general of the prefecture and General de Linarès. The names of the 84 dead for France are slowly recited.
