Located at 15km from Remiremont, Plombières-les-Bains is a spa town marked by 2000 years of history with an incomparable historical heritage. It was, as early as the 5th century BC, the site of a Celtic settlement. It was the Romans who, during the conquest of the Gauls, discovered hot springs and founded the resort. They then built their bathing constructions in order to take full advantage of the benefits of thermalism. They installed a pool of hot thermal water for the Roman soldiers. The resort was badly damaged during the barbarian invasions, but was reborn from the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, illustrious curists will follow one another: the Dukes of Lorraine, of course, and their cousins the Dukes of Guise, but also Montaigne, Louis XV of France and his family, Voltaire, Beaumarchais (the premiere of his famous "Marriage of Figaro" took place in Plombières), Napoleon Bonaparte, Josephine and Hortense de Beauharnais, Napoleon III, Berlioz, Lamartine or Alfred de Musset, and even Maupassant, Feydeau, Alexandre Dumas fils.... came to heal their ailments at the waters of Plombières. Today, Plombières is a lively and charming town, a two-thousand-year-old spa that treats intestinal and rheumatic diseases from March to November. In an authentic and historical setting, the Roman spa Calodaé offers all year round all the pleasures of rejuvenation and harmony with the body. Situated in a valley on the hillsides, the town has narrow streets that give it a very special atmosphere. The picturesque aspect is based on its 18th - 19th century houses decorated with architectural details and balconies made of wrought iron, cast iron or wood. Plombières is called the city of a thousand balconies. Moreover, there is a 1001st balcony just as unusual and unique: the terraced gardens. From the Coteau de la Vierge, you can enjoy breathtaking views over the valley.
