RUINE DU CHÂTEAU ET PLUS VIEUX DONJON DE LORRAINE

France > Grand Est > Vosges > 88240 > Fontenoy-le-Château > CENTRE VILLAGE

At the end of the 10th century, the bishops of Toul built a large square tower on a rocky spur overlooking the village. It is the oldest keep in Lorraine. A site of great strategic importance locking the valley of the Coney, the castle was reinforced several times to adapt to artillery. Ravaged during the Thirty Years' War, the castle was gradually dismantled. In 1978, the Association of the Friends of Old Fontenoy is formed and undertakes steps to protect and enhance this heritage. Stroll through this remarkable site and linger carefully on the various terraces located on the eastern side. At the top you can admire the keep, the base of which has been restored. Free visit or guided tour on request. During the thermal season, the Tourist Office and the association "les amis du vieux Fontenoy" regularly organize historical guided tours of Fontenoy le château.
