L'Ermitage de Saint-Walfroy

France > Grand Est > Ardennes > 08370 > Margut

Around the year 565, the deacon Walfroy, a rare stylite monk from the West, established himself on the summit of the mountain that today bears his name. His goal was to convert to Christianity the pagan peoples of the Trevirians who worshipped the goddess Arduinna. Thus, Saint-Walfroy became a place of pilgrimage and a church was built there. Completely destroyed in 1944, it was rebuilt in 1957 on the basis of the old 6th century building. We discover stained glass windows by Pierre Gaudin, mosaicist, master glassmaker from an exceptional lineage.
