SAINT MAX

France > Grand Est > Meurthe-et-Moselle > 54130 > Saint-Max > 32 Avenue Carnot

The town of Saint Max is located northeast of Nancy on the other side of the Meurthe River. It is crossed by the avenue Carnot which is lined with shops and some beautiful houses dating from the beginning of the 20th century, including the town hall. The city hall is located in the house of a rich wine merchant, built in 1906 by the architect Joseph Hornecker (to whom we owe notably the building of the Opera in Place Stanislas in Nancy). The small church of Saint Médard is the oldest building in the area (with the Commanderie tower in Nancy): it has a Romanesque tower, a capital from the 12th century and a baroque style altar. Note also the statue of the Virgin and Child on its façade. At the entrance of the city, along the banks of the Meurthe, the castle of the Meurthe bridge or Garnier castle dates from Napoleon III. It houses the library which has 22,000 documents. Note that Saint-Max is the last town in the agglomeration (outside the city center) to still have an independent cinema, the Royal Saint Max. It is from Saint-Max that France Cartes, the European leader in playing cards (which bought Grimaud), markets its card games all over the world. The district of the crystal works, built at the time of the DAUM brothers, is contemporary with the Ecole de Nancy, it has just been rehabilitated and the paths along the green branch of the Meurthe river take the walker through a charming environment, alternately on the territories of Nancy and Saint-Max. During your walk, you will discover other interesting buildings such as the chapel of the Mouth of the Wolf, on the heights of Saint-Max, so called because its cross is surmounted by the mouth of a wolf.
