France > Grand Est > Vosges > 88400 > Gérardmer > chemin des Fourmis

Picnic table with a view on a part of the lake of Gérardmer, on the heights of Mérelle and on the Beillard below. This picnic table is named after Jean-Baptiste Morand, born on February 8, 1813 in Gérardmer. He had an exceptional career in the French army. He started as a soldier during the Belgian War of Independence, during which he participated in the capture of the citadel of Antwerp. He became a captain in 1841. Following the Crimean War, he was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1855. In 1870, the Franco-Prussian war broke out and he came out of retirement to take charge of the Mobile Guard Battalion of Isère. He was promoted to Officer of the Legion of Honor. He then retired to Gérardmer and participated in the creation of the Promenades Committee in 1872. When he died in 1893, he was remembered for his tireless work in creating and marking out trails. In his memory, the Promenades Committee named this rock after him and the city named an avenue after him along the lake.
