France > Hauts-de-France > Nord > 59670 > Oxelaëre > La Place

Oxelaëre has about 500 inhabitants and covers 472 hectares. It is located at the foot of the Cassel Mountain, the highest point of Flanders with its 176 m of altitude; from the heart of the village, the view on Cassel is magnificent. The name of Oxelaëre comes from the Germanic words oxe, meaning "ox", and laer, meaning "clearing". This small village was marked by the Roman settlement around the mountain: the city of Cassel was not located on the summit, but on the slopes the summit, but on the slopes (it is assumed that the commercial city was located on the northern slope, and that the political city political city was located in the south, on Bavinchove and Oxelaëre. Its location on the southern slope of Mount Cassel (and therefore, well sheltered) also made it a popular holiday resort for some of the middle-class families of the Lille area. Today, Oxelaëre is a green and flowery village which has kept its identity, with in particular its church in which one can observe interesting in which one can observe interesting and well known altarpieces, its buildings made of red brick and many other and many other details to discover. The northern part of the village is in a very wooded environment, which is explained by the local topography. The slopes are steeper, and offer a landscape of hedged farmland where dairy cows dominate. To the south and east, the slopes are less steep. Thus, we have an open field landscape in which polyculture (potatoes, beets, cereals, vegetable productions) is predominant. It is also a lively town thanks to the various activities that exist there, carried out by associations, volunteers and craftsmen.
