Église Saint-Willibrord

France > Hauts-de-France > Nord > 59820 > Gravelines > Rue de l'Esplanade

Around 1190, the inhabitants built a new chapel and obtained parish rights from the Abbey. Completed in 1598, it takes its name from the evangelizing bishop from Ireland who landed in Gravelines in the 7th century and founded the parish of Saint Willibrord. Since its construction, the present building has undergone numerous restorations, following the many wars that have taken place in the area. Inside, take a look at the magnificent 19th-century wooden altarpieces and the funerary monument of Claude Berbier du Metz, a listed monument. The nave's three naves, delimited by powerful brick columns with cylindrical shafts, are covered by three plastered, panelled barrel vaults. The church's furnishings date back to the 16th century.
