Cimetière Militaire Allemand de Verlinghem

France > Hauts-de-France > Nord > 59237 > Verlinghem > Rue de Perenchies

The German military cemetery at Verlinghem contains the bodies of 1,157 soldiers who died in the First World War. The cemetery was established in April 1916 by German troops and operated until September 1918. Many of those buried here died in hospitals in Tourcoing from wounds sustained in the battles over the Armentières position and the British offensive of 1917. The Germans made do with what was available: most of the crosses were made of wood, some of stone... Then everything was replaced by metal, which is easier to maintain No flowers, the heroes rest in the shade of trees, as is the custom. The Service for the Care of German Military Graves (SESMA), based in Metz, continues to look after the sites, which are less well-known and visited than the Allied cemeteries.
