"In Gallo-Roman times, this village was known as Ernodurum, meaning "passage over the Arnon", and was situated on the route between Bourges and Argenton/Creuse. Dozens of stelae were unearthed between 1861 and 1921, and are now scattered around various museums, including those in Bourges and Châteauroux. The village became St.Ambroix after Sanctus Ambroisius, bishop of Cahors, died there in 770. The La Prée estate is home to an ancient Cistercian abbey founded in 1128 by St.Bernard, and is home to artists of all disciplines
