The result of the eponymous pit, the Renard slag heap is now a natural area home to remarkable plant and animal communities. With its characteristic conical shape, it is also one of the jewels of the region's cultural heritage. A symbol of miners? work and early union struggles, the Renard pit was the setting for Emile Zola?s novel "Germinal".
