L'invention de l'agriculture et toutes ses conséquences

Date:

Has agriculture made human beings miserable? A look back at 10,000 years of history and the race for progress.

10,000 years ago... Archaeology is no longer a hobby, a treasure hunt or a more or less boring accumulation of debris. On the contrary, it allows us to reflect on the trajectories of past, if not present, societies. The Neolithic period, i.e. the invention of sedentary agriculture 12,000 years ago, independently in different parts of the world, was the most radical break in human history. It led to exponential population growth, and thus a race for technical progress to feed more and more people on a finite planet, an exacerbation of tensions between now territorialized communities, an endless increase in social inequalities and, finally, constant environmental degradation? inaugurating what is now known as the Anthropocene. But was all this inevitable, and haven't certain societies of the past made different choices? And in the end, did agriculture make human beings unhappy, or, like all inventions, is it only what humans make of it?
