Ancien Presbytère

The former Bourgneuf presbytery pre-dates the 17th century.

Buildings dating back to the 17th century The former presbytery is shown on a plan drawn up by Liverman in 1695. At the time, the "bourg-neuf" was expanding rapidly. The cemetery lay between the presbytery and the church. There were also banal ovens (before the Revolution, the banal oven was a possession of the seigneur, which he made available to all inhabitants in return for a tax called "le ban"). At the time, Bourgneuf was a parish that needed to be Christianized. Between the 12th and 15th centuries, various religious sites were established in the town: a convent of Franciscan monks or Cordeliers (located near today's Musée du Pays de Retz), a church (Notre-Dame de Bon Port) (the present-day church still bears this name) and several chapels As the number of worshippers grew, the old church was demolished and rebuilt, and the cemetery moved. A private home Today, the presbytery building still exists, along with a few surrounding walls. However, it no longer belongs to the diocese. It has become private property. A cast-iron statue of Joan of Arc stands in a niche on the espanade side in front of the church. Today, the house is used as tourist accommodation in Villeneuve-en-Retz.
