Rendez-vous : Jean-Marie Bytebier

Date:

The Musée d?Art Moderne de Fontevraud has invited Belgian artist Jean-Marie Bytebier to present a highly coherent collection of paintings and drawings in the museum?s permanent collections and in the village?s former presbytery.

"Rendez-vous" is a matter of dialogue, a meeting of the eyes. His paintings and drawings are inspired by photographs, impressions from walks and references to art history. At the museum, Jean-Marie Bytebier?s works resonate with the paintings and objects in the permanent collections, and are even inspired by several of them, created during a residency at Fontevraud in December 2023. This working residency enabled him to immerse himself in the atmosphere, architectural context, shapes and colors that surrounded him. In the former presbytery, a naturally lit domestic space open to the outside world, the artist?s paintings are not perceived in the same way as on the museum?s walls. Their placement above fireplaces, in cupboards, or in the midst of 18th-century wood panelling, influences the way the works are viewed. "Rendez-vous" is therefore also an invitation to viewers to engage their gaze for the duration of their visit. Jean-Marie Bytebier's paintings straddle the line between abstraction and figuration. The way the artist reworks the landscape - selecting details, enlarging them, turning the motif inside out, removing the horizon line, scratching or cutting out certain parts - leads the viewer to reconsider the perception of his or her own environment, and to approach the way in which artists construct their images. So, by giving Jean-Marie Bytebier "Rendez-vous", he is giving us an appointment with art, and proving that the works and places we think we know so well can still surprise us.
