Come and visit Etival Clairefontaine Abbey on a guided tour! Built of sandstone, Notre-Dame d'Etival is one of the most beautiful and complete Romanesque churches in the Vosges, typical of the Romanesque art of southern Lorraine: the pillars are alternately strong and weak; each bay in the main nave has two bays in the aisles; the walls are two storeys high, with narrow paired windows at the top and single windows on the first floor. Although the architecture is Romanesque, the decoration of the nave, built around 1200, heralds the Gothic style: cylindrical pillars, capitals with large hooks, ogival crosspieces.
