Église Saint-Didier

France > Grand Est > Ardennes > 08190 > Asfeld > Place de l'Église ####

It was built at the end of the 17th century on the site of the old village church, in accordance with the wishes of Jean-Jacques III de Mesmes, Count of Avaux. The extravagantly shaped church was designed by two talented architects: Dominican friar François Romain and Fleury, a local architect. The structural work was completed in 1683. The church was completed, received and blessed in 1685. The plan is quite original, as it was conceived in the shape of a viola da gamba. Built entirely of brick, its architecture of colonnades, domes and cupolas is truly daring. None of the building's walls follow a straight line. With 138 pillars and columns, the church is 44.82 metres long and has an outer perimeter of 145 metres. The church boasts a 7-stop organ built around 1900 by Clovis Renault. Saint-Didier church is open all year round. Guided tours are available on reservation, please contact the Destination Sud-Ardennes tourist office. Did you know? There is a 10-point interpretation trail in Asfeld, tracing the village's history back to the 17th century.
