CHAPELLE DES MARTYRS

France > Pays de la Loire > Maine-et-Loire > 49530 > Orée d'Anjou > Moulin de la Croix - SAINT LAURENT DES AUTELS

The Chapelle des Martyrs was built in 1878 in Saint-Laurent-des-Autels to commemorate the loss of life during the French Revolution.

During the Revolution, Saint-Laurent-des-Autels, like many of its neighboring communes, suffered the passage of the "infernal columns" on March 16 and 17, 1794. tragically, 230 people were killed and buried in several mass graves. In 1878, the Martyrs' Chapel was built on one of these graves, one kilometer from the town, and blessed by Monseigneur Freppel (Bishop of Angers) on June 2, 1879. In 2014-2015, the building was restored with the help of the Fondation du Patrimoine. The chapel is open to the public. Inside, you'll find a soundtrack, old photographs and explanatory panels. Guided tours of the chapel are available (on request) with volunteers from the "Les amis de la chapelle des Martyrs" association.
