France > Pays de la Loire > Maine-et-Loire > 49420 > Ombrée d'Anjou > Rue de l'Hippodrome, Pouancé

The church of Saint-Aubin overlooks the village and the pond of Saint-Aubin and is located 1 km from Pouancé and its medieval castle.

At the gates of Brittany, the village of Saint-Aubin pre-existed that of Pouancé. Around 1110, the bishop of Angers, Renaud III de Martigné, gave the church of Saint-Aubin to the abbey of Marmoutier (near Tours). His monks establish a priory, near the enclosure, in the Madeleine chapel. In 1640, the church of Saint-Aubin was refurbished to accommodate the numerous clergy who served it In the 19th century, the building was adorned with an altarpiece representing the Assumption of the Virgin (made by Delavente) and decorated with murals, recently renovated. Today, the church is labelled "Eglise accueillante en Anjou" and is open all year round.
