Discovery of the remains of Chemillé castle

A first castle, built from 1030 onwards by Peter I on the orders of Foulques Nerra, to replace that of Saint-Pierre, very quickly became the centre of an important courtyard. In the 12th century, the castle was destroyed and then rebuilt, losing its importance due to the lack of resident lords. The door of the castle (identical to that of Montreuil-Bellay) dates from the beginning of the 13th century. It is curious because of its beehive architecture and is surmounted by a sculpture representing a man throwing stones at assailants: "Le bonhomme Chemillé". The place of the portcullis is still visible. To discover the remains of the castle's ramparts, follow the Coulée verte route. You will be able to guess the angle of the fortress with its projection. These ramparts were destroyed at the end of the Wars of Religion, in the 16th century.
