CHAPELLE NOTRE DAME DE SAINT SULPICE

France > Pays de la Loire > Maine-et-Loire > 49125 > Cheffes > Val Saint Sulpice

Following the Sarthe à Cheffes river by the side of the mill, you reach the Val Saint-Sulpice and its chapel, one of the ports of Cheffes which faces the lock.

The chapel of Notre Dame de Saint Sulpice à Cheffes was restored in 1882, in the taste of the Renaissance. Above the entrance door, Notre Dame de Sion, patron saint of Christian mothers. The walls bear witness to a much older origin; the arch visible from the river side dates back to the 11th century. The flat chevet preserves traces of a 15th century window or niche. Inside, the decoration is modest: the nave is made of carpentry and painted wooden floor like the one of the church in the past. Two groups of 19th century statues frame the entrance: a Piéta and a Virgin and Child. In the choir stands Our Lady of Chefs, two polychrome carved heads dressed. In 1716, Ballain cites Notre Dame de Saint Sulpice as a place of pilgrimage where "in the past, many miracles were performed".
