LES BAINS DOUCHES MUNICIPAUX

The need to promote personal hygiene in a city where the possession of a toilet is then exceptional, will lead the municipality to order from its architect Léon Guinebretière, a building to be used as a public bath.

This building, whose construction began in 1925, opened to the public in 1927. The exterior is modest but modern. It draws from the art deco repertoire in a spirit close to the Viennese Secession. The geometric lines are softened by the use of Egyptian motifs. Composed of 16 showers and 6 baths, the bathroom is dominated by the blue of the mosaics ordered to the artist Isidore Odorico, also author of the swimming pool Saint-Georges of Rennes. These mosaics offer for each cabin the same delicate pattern again inspired by Viennese art and play with the contrasts between the blue and yellow vertical and horizontal lines. The building has been classified as 20th century heritage in 2011.
