The village of Matheflon : a beautiful panorama of the Loir Valley

Its history goes back to the dark and unclear period of Anjou's history in the High Middle Ages (511-987). After the death of Charlemagne in 814, the empire broke up and Breton and Norman raiders invaded the country. Charles II the Bald sacked everything in his path. In the lower valley of the Loir he seized the castle of Villevêque, Robert le Fort was killed, in short it was chaos. In the middle of this chaos, Foulque III Nerra built a network of small fortresses to ensure the defense of Anjou: Briollay, La Roche Foulques, and of course Matheflon. The chapel of Matheflon was at the beginning a simple wooden keep which dominated the Loir on which the village of Matheflon is today.
