Les ruines de l'Eglise Saint-Blaise

France > Grand Est > Haut-Rhin > 68800 > Leimbach > rue de Rammermsatt

The ruins of the St. Blaise church overlook the hidden vineyard of Leimbach at the Gottestal. Every year at the beginning of February, a pilgrimage takes place here to protect against sore throats.

Located at the exit of the village of Leimbach, in the direction of Rammersmatt, in the valley of the Gottesthal, the cemetery has replaced the nave in the ruins of the former church of Saint-Blaise. The place of worship was first mentioned in 1181, together with the whole village, as part of the property of the Oelenberg monastery and later under the lordship of Thann. The Romanesque porch is a reminder of this early period. In 1468 the church was destroyed by Swiss mercenaries and rebuilt shortly afterwards. Further reconstruction and restoration work took place during the 18th century, but the First World War took its toll on the church and it was decided to build a new church in 1925. Every February, the pilgrimage of St. Blaise, who is invoked against sore throats, still takes place in Leimbach.
