History: Mouzon owes its name to "Moso Magos" (= market on the Meuse). It is a town rich in more than 2,000 years of history, here are the main stages (source: www.mouzon.fr ): - At the end of the 5th century: Mouzon and its surroundings became the property of the archbishopric of Reims, the domain of Saint Rémi - 971: foundation of the Benedictine monks' abbey. The domain becomes important and rich (mills, forests, crops).- 1379: the King of France, Charles V, makes an exchange with the Archbishop of Reims, and takes possession of Mouzon in order to better fortify the town and watch over the border.- 1521: Charles V laid siege to Mouzon - 1653: Turenne and the French army retook Mouzon, which had been badly damaged by successive battles and sieges - 1659: by the Treaty of the Pyrenees signed by Louis XIV, the border of the Kingdom was pushed back 20 km to the East (beyond Carignan) and Mouzon lost its role as a border town. The ramparts and the castle are abandoned then demolished.
