Eglise Notre-Dame

Notre-Dame forms an interesting ensemble with the ruins of the 12th century castle which dominates it and a 19th century wash house which is very well presented. It is a building composed of a single nave, a transept and a choir of two bays, the first of which is flanked by chapels. If the transept is clearly identifiable on the outside by its gabled walls, it is not the same on the inside where its volume merges with that of the first bay of the choir and the chapels to form a sort of double transept. Sitting on the crossing, the bell tower is openwork with bays in broken arches without decoration but crowned with a cornice with modillions decorated with masks. It must date back to the end of the 12th century, like the nave, but without any striking features. These are the oldest parts of the building, which underwent major modifications in the middle of the 16th century with the underpinning of the base of the bell tower, the construction of the crosspieces and the eastern parts. This whole ensemble is covered with seven ribbed vaults with a prismatic profile falling on brackets that were often redone. Some of them, however, have kept their ancient sculpted decoration. The windows, with their secondary semi-circular grid, already show the Renaissance style. The nave is covered by a beautiful frame from the same period, with carved gables and blocks. The church has a stone Virgin and Child, a good example of popular sculpture from the beginning of the 14th century. Dominique Vermand
