The city was destroyed by the first world war, and its rebirth involved the restoration of major architectural works of the past and the construction of new buildings. A new style, Art Deco, was born. At the end of the First World War, the city, occupied from August 1914 to September 1918 by the German army and located on the Hindenburg Line, was almost 70% destroyed. During the 1920s, the city was rebuilt. Our Art-Deco tour is available at the Tourist Office.
