The construction of the tower was completed during the reign of Valéran III of Luxembourg in the 14th century. 22 metres high, its military function is recalled by loopholes, gunboats and machicolations. In the Middle Ages, the Valéran tower was one of the city's entrance gates. In the rooms of the tower, inscriptions were engraved on the walls by the prisoners, the most legible of which reads: "I was put in this infernal dungeon with bread and water for having been accused of bringing in contraband tobacco.
