FORT DE BOIS L'ABBE

France > Grand Est > Vosges > 88390 > Uxegney > 11 Rue des Forts

Take a leap into the past and find yourself at the end of the 19th century! By the light of oil lamps, discover the original architecture of the Seré de Rivières forts before modernization. This is the experience you can live during the exceptional opening of the fort of Bois l'Abbé to the public, on July 14th and for the Heritage Days. Ticket valid for the visit of both forts The fort of Bois l'Abbé is located a little more than a kilometer east of the fort of Uxegney. Built from 1884 to 1885, its role was to complete the action of the Uxegney fort on sectors out of sight of the latter. It remained intact after having gone through the two world wars and was not modernized or reinforced, unlike the Uxegney fort, except for 4 tanks for anti-aircraft artillery, and has kept its original masonry appearance. During your visit you will see the locations of the cannons on the top of the fort. Inside, you will be able to admire the variegated sandstone masonry of the caponiers that defended the ditches, the superb staircases that gave access to the artillery positions, the impressive gunpowder magazine with a capacity of 30 tons of explosives, as well as the bakery whose bread ovens supplied the forts of Bois l'Abbé, Uxegney, and La Grande Haye located nearby. This visit by lantern light will give you the impression of having traveled back in time!
