CROIX DE CHEMIN AU VAL D'AJOL

France > Grand Est > Vosges > 88340 > Le Val-d'Ajol

The first cross in the Val d'Ajol dates back to Charlemagne, and was used to demarcate cultivated land. It was not long before the people of Ajol took up the habit of erecting crosses in memory of a loved one, whether the victim of a violent death or not. In this way, the house was placed under the protection of heaven. It also served as an Ex-voto following a vow. The Val d'Ajol had 145 crosses, 3 of which are listed as historic monuments (a 16th-century structure in the hamlet of Les Chênes, a 17th-century crossroads in Larrière and a crossroads called the Jaranceau cross dating from 1626 in an open field). Part of the most important Way of the Cross in Christendom.
