ÉGLISE NOTRE DAME DE L'ASSOMPTION

France > Grand Est > Vosges > 88340 > Le Val-d'Ajol > Place de l'église

The first church in Val d'Ajol looks more like a small chapel. It stands on the only mound in the valley. Judged too small, a new church was built in the 16th century on the Place du Sô. The oldest part of the church dates from the 16th century, and successive extensions were built up to the 18th century to accommodate the growing number of worshippers. Following the earthquake of 1682, the church tower had become unsafe. It was built on unstable ground. It was consolidated in 1734 with the construction of this portico. The portico is composed of 3 porches answering the nave and aisles of the church. The bell tower houses 4 bells. The roof is covered with Lava stone. Numerous elements inside the church were classified as historic monuments in 1926: - an 18th-century altarpiece - a 16th-century Christ on the Cross - a 15th-century piéta
