COLLÉGIALE SAINT-NICOLAS

France > Grand Est > Moselle > 57670 > Munster > 42 Rue du presbytère

What majesty in the two spires of the church of Saint Nicolas, 73 meters high, dominating the village of Munster in Lorraine and the rural ocean that surrounds it! As early as the 12th century, a pilgrimage in honour of Saint Nicolas took place here. The canons of the collegiate church founded around 1224 by the lord of Fénétrange decided to undertake the construction of a vast church, to replace the existing sanctuary. The construction of this beautiful sandstone building, in the Gothic style, began in 1254 with the generous help of the counts of Fénétrange and Torcheville. The collegiate church with three naves and three apses was completed in the 15th century and decorated with statues. The knight Count Guillaume de Torcheville is at the origin of the legend that accompanies the creation of the church: pursued by enemy lords, he got lost and carried away by his armour, almost drowned in a pond. His dog saved him as soon as he vowed to build a church dedicated to Saint-Nicolas. In Munster you can discover the mysteries of these legends of yesteryear or enjoy the splendour of traditional ceremonies. Open by appointment
