Between 1875 and 1879, the Scottish writer Stevenson canoed down the Scheldt, the Sambre and the Oise. A journey that he recounted in his story "Canoeing on the Northern Rivers" (available in paperback). It is amusing to see him canoeing down the "Golden Valley" (the nickname of the Oise downstream from La Fère) and evoking the amazed look of a child who sees it from the bank near Chauny (at a time when canoeing was not a common practice)!
