LAVOIR DE MILLERY

France > Grand Est > Meurthe-et-Moselle > 54670 > Millery > rue des mariés

In 1811, in order to allow all the inhabitants to have access to spring water, for the animals to drink, and to wash their clothes other than in the Moselle, which was dangerous in case of floods and frost, the commune built 3 fountains in the village (place de la République, place des Vignes and rue des Roses). It also built the "Great Fountain" on the Place des Mariés. This Great Fountain was built according to the principle of the old timber-framed halls of the Middle Ages with a drinking trough and a washhouse. Dismantled in 1974, the washhouse-watering place was rebuilt from 2011 to 2013 according to the original plans. This reconstruction was made possible thanks to the support of the Fondation du Patrimoine, the Conseil Général de Meurthe et Moselle, senators Evelyne Didier and Philippe Nachbar, deputy Jean-Yves le Déaut, the Conseil Régional de Lorraine, the Bassin de Pompey and the inhabitants of Millery by subscription. The Millery washhouse was awarded the 2014 Regional Prize for Heritage Ribbons for Lorraine.
