CUSTINES formerly Condé . In Celtic times, Condé or Condatum meant confluence. It only appeared in our commune in the 12th century after many transformations before taking the form of CUSTINE then CUSTINES around 1825. The current coat of arms is that which appeared in 1389 on the seal of the provostry of Condé preserved in the Treasury of the Charters: "Argent with a castle of Sable accompanied on the dexter and on the sinister by a scythe of Azure, in chief an antique C of Gules and in abyss a shield of Azure with two bars leaning on each other of Or flanked by two scythes of Argent put in pal". The small village of Condé has an origin prior to our era, as evidenced by flint and quartz fragments as well as a fragment of a polished stone axe, discovered in the vicinity of the castle. After the conquest of Gaul by the Roman legions, the "Pax Romana", the great invasions, the Merovingian period, the wars between the Dukes of Lorraine, the Counts of Bar and the Bishopric of Metz, Condé became Custines.
