Although it is impossible to pinpoint its exact location, it would seem that a primitive Beaulieu called "the real one" existed long before the present site. But the ruins were never recognized. However, an immense stone massif cleared a few hundred metres on the eastern slope suggests an imposing old building . Formerly, the chapel was home to a statue of the Virgin Mary, particularly venerated during two great pilgrimages: one in September and the other still active on 15 August. This virgin is today placed in the church of Paulhac. During the Middle Ages, it was also a refuge for the pilgrims of Santiago de Compostela who could take shelter there. In 1961, a reproduction of the statue was installed on the rock near the church of St John the Baptist in Paulhac. Access to the remains of the chapel is from the Vachellerie by taking the GR Tour de Margeride (red and yellow markings) towards the south.
