Classified as a "Historic Monument", the Leughenaer Tower, which overlooks the Place du Minck and its fish market, is the oldest monument in Dunkirk. Built around 1450, it is the last of the twenty-eight towers of the original 15th century city wall. Also known as the "Liar's Tower", legend has it that it was used to deceive ships arriving at the port and to ground them in order to plunder them. The truth is that the numerous sandbanks made access to the city particularly difficult.
