Situated in the heart of the Gorges du Tarn, the village of La Malène experienced difficult times during the Revolution. The rocks still bear the marks of the fires that ravaged the village The main places and monuments of the village are: the manor of Malène which dates from the 15th century (Louis XII ordered to raze the rebel fortresses but thanks to the services of a lord of Gévaudan, the castle was spared. It has since been transformed into a hotel restaurant). There is also the 12th century Romanesque church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, listed as a Historic Monument since 1928, and the ruins of Castel Merlet, the oldest known castle in France. La Malène is especially known for its boatmen who make you discover the magnificent parades of the Tarn. The village is also the starting and finishing point for canoe and kayak trips. At the foot of two large causses, the village attracts visitors who enjoy the many outdoor activities.
