HAMEAU DE CASTELBOUC

The hamlet of Castelbouc is a must-see in the Tarn gorges. Well visible from the road coming from Sainte-Enimie, it is recognizable among miles by its ruined castle perched on an impressive cliff of the Méjean causse, below which is built a semi-troglodytic village attached to the rock of the cliff. The castle was destroyed during the Wars of Religion.

The hamlet of Castelbouc is a must-see in the Tarn gorges. Well visible from the road coming from Sainte-Enimie, it is recognizable among miles by its ruined castle perched on an impressive cliff of the Méjean causse, below which is built a semi-troglodytic village stuck to the rock of the cliff The charming narrow streets of the hamlet invite you to stroll, while in the distance you can hear the sound of a stream whose source gushes out not far from there. This source is at the origin of a cavity which will make the happiness of the amateurs of speleology, but it is also the cave, close to the Tarn, which is worth the blow of eye: it shelters indeed prints of dinosaurs dating from 168 000 million years! The castle was destroyed by its own lord during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century, to prevent it from being used by the Protestants who were advancing towards Sainte-Enimie The path on the left bank of the Tarn also passes through Castelbouc.
