Cimetière militaire allemand de Rancourt

This cemetery was created by the French in 1921, as the 1919 Treaty of Versailles had placed German cemeteries under French administration. It was not until 1926 that cemetery maintenance was transferred to the German state. The Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge (German People?s Association for the Care of War Graves) had been founded in 1919. It was also in 1926 that the symbol that marks the presence of German necropolises was adopted: four small black crosses dominated by a larger one. World Heritage site.
