L'Atelier du Sud

Date:

The exhibition is organised by the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in Arles in collaboration with LUMA. Launched by Maja Hoffmann, the artist residency was commissioned by the LUMA Foundation from the American artist Laura Owens, who piloted the project from 2020 to 2023.

The exhibition was held in an Arles house on rue du Cloître, which will be exceptionally open to the public (online booking only, open from mid-November - see below). In 1888 in Arles, Van Gogh dreamt of sharing his roof with other painters, both from Paris and local artists, to create an authentic living studio. Between 2020 and 2023, the American artist Laura Owens will organise and run the L'Atelier du Sud residency in a house on the rue du Cloître. Today, the Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles is inviting the 24 participants to come together to reflect on this stage of their artistic journey. The works on display, whether drawn from their Arles experience or specially created for the exhibition, highlight the adventurous and sensual nature of this group, but also the promise offered by collaboration as a form of artistic practice. Ranging from sculpture to video, with a strong focus on painting, they reveal how living spaces condition creation, and question the notion of the domestic as a place for artistic experimentation. Van Gogh's paintings Field of Wheat with Poppies and Green ears of corn (Arles, 1888) and several facsimiles of his correspondence will accompany the work of the participants in L'Atelier du Sud.
