LA MINE DE NEUVES-MAISONS

France > Grand Est > Meurthe-et-Moselle > 54230 > Neuves-Maisons > Rue du Val de Fer

Discover the Neuves-Maisons Iron Mine. On the hillside of the Hayes massif, below the forest, enter with a guide into real 19th-century galleries, whose 150th anniversary is being celebrated in 2024, for a visit alternating explanations of the history of the miners and of iron, with simple practical exercises to better understand the work of these pioneers of the industrial revolution... Fascinating for young and old alike. (No age limit) The mine, located at the heart of the world's second largest iron reserve, became the largest mine in the southern iron basin around Nancy, which comprised 33 mines. Connected to the factory below by a 4.5-kilometre-long railroad track (Chemin du Coucou, now Chemin des Traces), it supplied the seven blast furnaces of Neuves-Maisons for a century. This complex was one of the driving forces behind the industrial revolution, which transformed construction, transport and water supply by transforming ore into steel or cast iron. The symbol of this revolution is the Eiffel Tower, which in 1889 rose to twice the height of a cathedral spire. As ore, it came from our hillside, before being forged in Pompey and shipped to Paris. Guided tours without reservation are organized every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday, from 1.30 pm (first departure) to 4 pm (last departure) on the mine floor in Neuves-Maisons. The mine is open every day during the summer and summer vacations, without reservation. Groups can book any day of the year (mornings or afternoons, minimum eight people) Practical details The conditions in the mine (10 degrees all year round) mean that visitors just need to bring warm clothing (as in winter) and suitable footwear for a few muddy passages. We may be able to lend you jackets. The tour lasts around two hours. (Shorter for school groups) PRACTICAL INFORMATION: The site is located at the top of rue du val de fer, in Neuves Maisons (54230) (After the left-hand bend under the Zublin, enter the site through the large gate) On-site refreshment facilities and toilets are available to visitors. Open to all. Access and visits possible for people with reduced mobility, even in wheelchairs. We adapt to your needs.
