EGLISE ROMANE NOTRE DAME DE L'AOUACH

The Aouach church: an architectural gem.

The Romanesque church of Notre-Dame de l'Aouach dates back to the 12th century. It has always been a stopover on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, protecting the pilgrims, people and animals who take the ferry across the Garonne. The church is an architectural gem, containing such treasures as a gilded Virgin and Child, altar stones dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, and 19th-century ex-votos recounting the miracles associated with the Virgin's protection from the river's dangers. Special symbols may surprise you: Sculpted modillions are positioned under the porch at the entrance to the church. They represent elements of nature (birds, ivy and grapes), architecture (hammers, pliers and squares), as well as an anvil, a bell, a fish and a hand.
