In Contra-Tenor, Michael Spyres explores the different aspects, as well as the extremes, of the tenor voice as encountered in the Baroque repertoire of the 18th century, some of which spanned more than 3 octaves! During the Baroque era, there were numerous categorizations and vocal sub-genres to define the male voice, such as bass tenor, bartitenore, countertenor, haute-contre, spieltenor, tenor and taille. Michael Spyres, accompanied by the formidable Pomo d?Oro conducted by Francesco Corti, pays tribute to the great precursors who shaped what would become the tenor as we know him today, through Handel, Vivaldi, Porpora , Lully , Rameau , Vinci, Galuppi, Gluck, Hasse, Piccinni and the young Mozart.
