Jean-Philippe Rameau's nineteen Pièces de clavecin en concert are presented in six suites, or concerts, which are sustained by a tonal unity. Although the 18th-century term "concert" refers to chamber music, five of these pieces are transcribed and can be performed by the harpsichord alone. Each of the three instruments is given a true concertante role. The choice of a single score for all the voices bears witness to this. Rameau explains in his preface: "I thought I had to give them in score, because it is necessary not only for the three instruments to blend together, but also for the concertants to hear each other
