***Roman Balneo Center closed until further notice*** The Roman baths are known as Calodaé. The name of the balneotherapy center refers to the caldarium, which in ancient times was the part of the thermal baths where hot baths could be taken. The Plombières thermal baths are very simple, which confirms the idea that they were built primarily to accommodate war soldiers. However, the city has the largest open-air swimming pool north of the Loire, bordered at its extimité by four Gallo-Roman terraces that can still be seen at the entrance to the current building. The baths underwent several renovations, notably in the 16th century following flooding, followed by reconstruction in the 18th and refurbishment in the 19th. In the 20th century, the building was completely rebuilt to plans by architect François Grillot, under the aegis of Robert Danis. At the foot of the bleachers in the vestibule is a mosaic dating from 1938 and designed by Robert and Franck Danis. Some of the walls are covered with mural paintings by Frank Danis, restored in 1996 and listed as a Monument Historique in 2001.
