LE PRIEURÉ D'HÉRIVAL

France > Grand Est > Vosges > 88340 > Le Val-d'Ajol > Hérival

The Priory of Hérival; 900 years of history. In 1090, Engidalde built a hut in the upper part of the Hérival valley at the Vieilles Abbayes. Towards the end of the 14th century, the monks built a church and buildings in the valley of the Combeauté. At that time the eremitic features were gradually abandoned. At the beginning of the 18th century, an important reconstruction took place. On July 23, 1789, peasants entered the Priory and were forced to hand over the property titles. The Priory of Hérival is on the list of national assets. In 1802, the buyer sold the church and the monks' living quarters for demolition. All that remains is the Logis des Hôtes (guest house) which he uses as his home and his farm, barn and stables. In the 19th century, the Fleurot family, prestigious osteopaths, settled in Hérival. One of their last study skeletons is installed in a cupboard visible under the porch of the Logis de Hôtes. Today, it is pleasant to walk around this ancient site, however, it is not possible to cross the porch which gives onto the private interior courtyard. Nevertheless, under the porch there are signs that give precise information to those who are curious about history. Monique & Gilbert Villemin, after Dom Galli the historian of Hérival. 1970.
