It is a natural marker on the dividing line between the forest of Remiremont (formerly a partial possession of the Chapter of Chanoinesses) and the domain granted to the monks of Hérival. A whole series of milestones remain engraved RMT/HER , from the Notre Dame cross to the Peutet. This stone is located at a crossroads of former (and current) forest roads: - the road from the guards' hut to Le Peutet, thus from the "chemin de Comté" (about the current route des Forts) to Ban d'Ajol - the road from Hérival to Plombières, Bellefontaine, Ruaux = cures served by the religious of Hérival. Possible legends: - A religious from Hérival would have used this place as a hunting post. It was Brother Nicole (or Nicolle). In the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, the rule was gradually relaxed and, according to Dom Galli, some of the monks engaged in fishing and hunting. - A religious from Hérival would have given an appointment to a woman named Nicole.
